@1990’s – after listening to Leann Rimes, I wanted to write a similar style song for a female voice. The words “I still love you, but I don’t need to” popped in my head as I was writing.

It grew into a song about realizing the difference between “needing” to love someone, and making conscious choices about that love. One of the loving choices is refusing to continue being in an abusive relationship.

Oh I don’t really need to
Have a love I don’t agree to
Don’t say you’ll always stay
If you just break my heart again

Cause I see all the shadows
Falling down on our tomorrows
Though I still love you, and I still need you
No I won’t anymore

I pray that if you go away
You’ll still remember me
But can’t you hear my heartbeat breaking
Cause I just set you free

Oh I still really want you
And my heart and soul still longs to
Yes I still love you, and I still need you
But I won’t anymore

Break

But can’t you hear my heartbeat breaking
Cause I just set you free

Oh I still long to hold you
Remembering all the words I’ve told you
Oh I still love you, and I still want you
But I won’t anymore

I still love you, and I still need you
But I won’t need to anymore
